Railways around the world are facing a growing challenge to recruit and train new employees at all levels from technicians and apprentices to graduates to replace experienced staff and handle growing traffic. At the same time, the increasing use of advanced technology requires new skills, whilst industry reform is making it harder to provide specialists with cross-sector experience.

In our third live debate organised by Railway Gazette on Wednesday March 21, international speakers will address the key issues:

  • How do we make a career in the railway industry attractive to young people, given the strong competition from other sectors?

  • Is there a shortage of suitable people to draw on? Are we facing a demographic crisis as older employees retire?

  • In a high-tech industry, how much engineering knowledge do front line operators need to have? Do the suppliers and designers need to understand how the technology is used in practice?

  • How do we provide cross-industry experience in a vertically separated railway structure?

  • What are the key drivers for investment in training, and are these different for train operators, maintenance companies and suppliers?

  • Should training be provided in house or outsourced? What are the benefits of different models?

  • How do we record and track skills and qualifications as people move around the industry? Is there a need for international cross-recognition?
